US Highway 6 in Sterling

The 2013 flood caused extensive damage to Northeast Colorado. One area affected by the flood was US Highway 6 in the City of Sterling. Floodwaters overtopped the highway for an extended period of time causing irreparable damage to an already weathered asphalt roadway. The US 6 Sterling Improvements Project was created to repair the roadway and provide protection for future floods.

The US 6 Sterling Improvements project consisted of the removal of the existing asphalt surface, replacement of the storm sewer system, subgrade stabilization, the placement of 13,666 Cubic Yards of recycled concrete base course, paving 50,288 Square Yards of 9 ½” Concrete Pavement, bridge scour protection on three South Platte River bridges, riprap embankment protection, bridge deck rehabilitation, bridge joint replacement, and signal improvements.

One of the most challenging elements of this project was the construction of the US 6 and Riverview Road intersection. The Riverview Road corridor is the only access point for the Logan County Justice Center, the Sterling Rest area and Visitor Center, the CDOT Maintenance facility, Colorado State Patrol, Riverview Golf Course, the City of Sterling water treatment plant, and the City of Sterling sanitary sewer system. This high-profile intersection had to remain open at all times. Through the creative use of detour pavement and temporary signals, CDOT and Castle Rock Construction Company were able to safely complete the work with minimal impact to the public and its stakeholders.

This $8,000,000 construction project was completed twenty days ahead of schedule and $300,000 under budget.
